Most terrestrial telescopes are prismatic in their design and follow the design of a large monocular. Another design getting more and more popular for terrestial work is the Russian Maksutov. Both of these designs enable a scope to be very managable when in the field. These types of telescopes are often referred to as spottingscopes or fieldscopes.
Terrestrial telescopes are used to provide high magnification where more detail is required than a binocular may offer. Bird watchers will often carry both when in the field!

LUMO Maksutov Catadioptic Telescope

Every successful work of Russian astronomers is associated with the name LOMO� which has been involved in the development and manufacturing of observatory telescopes of different types for over 65 years. During this time, about 100 different telescopes with mirror diameters ranging from 250mm to 6m have been developed and manufactured by LOMO.
